To support SSC Rodbaston’s initiative for decarbonisation, the animal care centre was demolished and rebuilt in accordance with Passivhaus standards, establishing a learning environment for students focused on animal care. The building consists of classrooms, an aquatics lab, and an isolation zone.
mstep provided the Stage 3 design to align with the college’s low carbon system goals, incorporating an air-source heat pump for heating and electric point-of-use heaters for hot water. Each occupied room was fitted with a decentralised mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery to ensure a supply of fresh air.
mstep are also creating and rolling out an energy master plan with targets of zero carbon and near-zero water use for the estate as it develops in stages over the coming years.
