northumbria university’s coach lane campus consisting of a sports centre, block f, g and h were looking to remove/reduce fossil fuel usage. mstep were appointed to assess their existing building energy performance and the potential for the application of decarbonization strategies and assist in their application for the public sector decarbonisation scheme.

a computational thermal model was created of the sports centre to assess the heating and cooling loads that they currently require. the campus was constructed in 1990, the first recommendation was to upgrade the thermal properties of the external walls and the roof of the sports centre.

for blocks f,g and h, measures included removing gas boilers and replacing them with ground source heat pumps for heating, installing a new solar thermal system to provide hot water demand, replacing existing mechanical equipment for part l compliant equivalents, upgrading the BMS and installing a PV panel array with a 200kwe peak for solar powered electricity on campus.

it is expected that the implementation of these recommendations would result in a 60% decrease in carbon emissions across the campus.
