this single-storey residential building, recognised as Grade II listed, was designed by renowned architect Richard Rogers in 1967 and completed from 1968 to 1970. although it has undergone renovations, the building's envelope fails to meet modern regulations and standards.
mstep was assigned to explore ways to enhance the building's energy efficiency by evaluating the existing building envelope and minimizing carbon emissions while adhering to the constraints of its Grade II listing.
during a site visit, a thermal camera was employed to identify areas within the building that exhibited significant thermal losses. a thermal simulation model was developed to replicate these conditions. the findings indicated that upgrading all windows would be essential for improving heat retention in the property. to lower carbon emissions, a vertical borehole ground source heat pump was suggested as a substitute for the existing gas boilers used for heating.
furthermore, the installation of photovoltaic panels would contribute to further reducing emissions from the site. it is projected that implementing all these recommendations would completely offset the building's emissions.
