decarbonisation feasibility study

constructed between the years 1885 to 1928, st benet’s is a grade ii listed church comprising of a 300m2 nave, porches and chapels. due to the age of and size of the building, the nave fails to retain heat resulting in considerable discomfort for the congregation. the building currently utilises a large gas fired heater which proves to be both inefficient and expensive.

mstep were commissioned to assess the feasibility of implementing low carbon methods of heating the church with a main focus on integrating ground source heat pumps to be used in conjunction with underfloor heating. additional heating methods such as air-source heat pumps and electric boilers were also considered as low carbon alternatives.

the results of the study concluded that the installation of a ground source heating system would be the most effective and efficient method of providing heating to the church building. it is expected that the heating energy, running costs and co2 emissions by up to 75% within the first annum.
