mstep is a new practice but our team has extensive experience in delivering exceptional, award-winning buildings across the sectors and throughout the world.


We are a compact team with extensive reach - currently we are working on projects in the US, Switzerland, Brazil, Serbia and Montenegro as well as the UK.

 

We design zero resource buildings, decarbonise retrofits and deliver water neutral masterplans working with some of the most exciting architects of today.

 

Our clients are diverse: we are very proud to work with the United Nations, Frieze Art Fairs, Kings College London, This is Mark, National Trust, Equans, Essex, West Suffolk, Islington and Camden councils as well as the individual homeowners with the ambition to live with zero emissions and top architects.


We are now looking for an intermediate electrical engineer to join our team - an individual excited about their work who wants to test their skills across the sectors and develop and grow with our team.


The person

  • BEng/BSci or higher in Building Services, Electrical and Electronics engineering or a related subject and/or demonstrable experience of working as an electrical engineer in building services in the UK

  • Able to work using their own initiative with supervision and support on all technical aspects of electrical engineering

  • Excited about teamwork, a good listener and keen to work in a multi-disciplinary environment

  • Ambition to develop professionally and be responsible for a range of projects across the sectors and work in a client facing role

  • Proficiency in detailed design and performance specification and providing design and technical advice with a multidisciplinary approach on a wide range of projects

  • Experience in construction monitoring, commissioning and factory testing

  • Passionate about learning and about our world


Technical requirements of the role

  • Experience of working in the UK industry

  • Strong technical expertise within electrical building services design, gained working within the UK building services industry for either a consultancy or contractor

  • Knowledge of Utility and renewable energy requirements, UK design legislation and guidance

  • Ability to use Dialux lighting and Amtech electrical software

  • Fully proficient in AutoCAD 2D with either some knowledge of the use of Revit or the desire to learn

  • MS Office skills, particularly Word and Excel

  • Ability to sketch and communicate technical detail effectively

  • Good understanding of lighting design

  • Good understanding of fire and safety requirements

  • Good understanding of the UK energy regulations and utility requirements

  • Ability to input into and write reports


Electrical skills

  • Low voltage distribution systems

  • Low voltage standby generation

  • UPS systems

  • Cable calculations

  • Lighting calculations

  • Small power

  • Fire alarms

  • Intruder detection

  • Lightning protection

  • Access control and security systems

  • Data cabling and outlets


Qualifications

  • BEng/BSc/Meng in engineering discipline

  • CIBSE / IET / Engineering Council accredited honours degree

  • Right to work in the UK essential

  • 3-4 years’ electrical building services design experience

  • High standard of written and verbal English

  • Able to handle several ongoing projects at various stage

  • Ability to work independently to consistently high standards

  • Experience of working on commercial and residential projects

  • First-rate time management skills, demonstrating the capability to implement plans within time constraints

Responsibilities include

  • Electrical services design including but not limited to LV design including cable sizing, lighting and lighting controls, emergency lighting, fire alarms, security systems, lightning, and incorporating renewable energy sources into designs

  • Preparation and development of concept, feasibility and detailed design proposals, which include specifications, reports, drawings, schematics, calculations

  • Good communication skills required and be able to accompany colleagues to meetings with clients, other professional design team members and contractors

  • Providing design and technical advice with a multi-disciplinary approach on a wide range of projects

  • Construction monitoring, commissioning and factory testing
